Amber is a golden mix who came to us from Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter in Houma, LA.  She was in terrible shape.  The shelter consulted a vet who deemed her “unadoptable” and recommended euthanasia.  We brought her in for a second opinion and are happy to say that 2 separate vets in the Greater New Orleans area that were consulted and did not feel this recommendation was necessary to heed.  She was diagnosed with a severe yeast infection that made her loose 60% of her fur along with some cysts.  She also has yeast in her ears. She has a serious case of heartworm infection though she doesn’t have symptoms, thankfully.  She was also diagnosed with 2 separate intestinal parasites.  She is being treated for her ailments and her skin condition is progressing nicely.  Her vet bills are going add up quickly due to the number of ailments and required vet visits.  If you would like to help with these costs, please go to our PayPal link or mail a check to our Treasurer as described.

Note from foster family:
Amber (a.k.a. Little Girl) has been with us for 3 weeks.  Our first encounter with her was off-putting because her skin infection smelled horrible and being bald took a bit of getting used to.  She had to be bathed daily the first week (which really didn’t help with the smell as it was intense).  (She currently gets bathed every 2-3 days but odor is no longer a problem).  The first night Amber was here, she refused to come into the house. It was cool outside and she had no fur on her back half.  I put her on a leash and made her come in.  That was all she needed. She politely checked out the house, our 2 male goldens and settled right down.  We were shocked to see that when we said “go lay down” she actually knew the command.  We told her to get in the kennel for bed and she didn’t put up a fight about it…. “Wow, she is crate trained too”.  Considering her condition and the fact that she was in a high kill shelter, we have been pleasantly surprised to realize that someone at some point in her life took care of her. She has basic training and perhaps more that we have not discovered.

We have fostered numerous dogs over the years.  Even considering the amount of meds she takes and the bathing, she may be the easiest foster we have had.  She is polite, good natured, understands boundaries and just an easy keep.  She loves when our friend brings her toddler over as she and he play ball.  She will gently nudge his little hand until he takes the ball from her mouth.  She has stood next to a neighbor’s cat without any sign of wanting to go after it.

This Little Girl has been on 2 different antibiotics, de-wormers, antifungal meds and ear cleaners. She has never complained about taking her medicine. She just gobbles it down with her food.  She doesn’t enjoy getting her ears cleaned but allows it.

Although we do not know what kind of golden mix this little girl is, we speculate that she may have standard poodle mixed in her gene pool.  Her head is somewhat structured like a poodle and she moves with high steps as a poodle does.

She is not quite ready to go to be sent to a new home, she will be available by early April.  She will begin heartworm treatment on 16 March 2009.  If you are approved to adopt and interested in hearing more about her, please let us know.  She is going to make some lucky family very happy.
