Cruiser 2008- May 3, 2010

On April 19th, Cruiser was pulled from a high-kill shelter by another rescue west of Lafayette, LA. He only had a short time left due to limited space.  After getting him to my house, I noticed some medical issues that needed attention.  At the vet's office, he was diagnosed with severe heartworms, hookworms, anemia, fluid in the lungs and other related medical problems. He needed to stay for two nights under observation because his heart was so weak from the heartworms and he had difficulty breathing.
 
He continued on medical watch for two weeks at my home.  Every time I came in to see him, he would slowly wag his tail and lift his head. Cruiser had several good days but very little energy.  He ate home-cooked chicken and rice with occasional puppy kibble and canned food to help him regain his strength..  He always seemed to be happy that he had someone to care for him and he made me feel "at peace" while I sat with him.
 
On May 3rd, two weeks later, he passed away from the terrible heartworm disease.  It had advanced beyond stabilization or reversal.  Over that time many people became aware of his struggle to overcome his illness and prayed for him.  I am sure it comforted him in his last days to know that finally he had the love and support of good people.
 
Goodbye Sweet Cruiser!  Rest now without pain and we'll meet again at The Bridge.
