Chloe

Chloe went to her forever home
on April 6, 2008 in Florida.
Hi Jim,
Sorry it has been so long since I've updated you on Chloe. She
is doing much better with the housetraining but I am also keeping
her crated when we are not at home. Her chewing is still as
strong as ever but that isn't a big concern because I know that
is a natural stage that she will grow out of at some point.
We chose to have her treated for heartworms with the shots and
she is doing very well. It has been five weeks now since we
started and she is going a bit crazy to have some freedom and
run. Our vet gave her one shot the first week and then last
week (week 4) gave her a series of 2 more shots over two days.
We are supposed to keep her quiet for about 3 more weeks and
we are all looking forward to some good energy burning walks
after that!! She tolerated the treatment very well, in fact
we couldn't tell that she missed a beat!
We also had our Invisible Fence put in a few weeks ago and she
is doing great on that. She was really easy to train on it (according
to the installer) and we have worked with her on it but she
has no desire to push the limits.
All in all she is doing great! She is so sweet and eager to
please! We had her groomed with a summer cut so even the hair
bunnies that go along with goldens are few and far between and
she is much happier since it is getting so hot!
Thanks for checking on us. I will update you with pictures soon.

Dear Diane,
Just letting you know that Chloe made it to us safely and we
are already loving her. She made her entrance about and hour
ago and my daughter went wild. (Note:Her daughter is almost
4) They have been playing together and terrorizing the poor
cat since then! Chloe is already testing out all of her new
toys and following us around the house to make sure we are all
where we are supposed to be. She even went in Ella's room to
say good night...she brought in a toy showed it to Ella, Ella
showed Chloe her baby doll and then they were both good. Ella
is sleeping now and Chloe is chewing on her bone...all is good!:)
I'm going to get started with all of the heart worm stuff tomorrow.
I've printed out what you emailed and I'm going to take a few
days to process it all and get Chloe settled a bit before we
make any changes. I see what you mean when you say she is an
easy dog to have around. She is already showing us that she
will listen to any of us and has even performed commands that
Ella is giving her (sit, paw). She seems like she is already
very comfortable which is great. She's off in another part of
the room from me and my husband and seems very content so I'm
taking that as a good sign. Thank you for sending us such a
beautiful dog.

Hi Diane
Update from her foster mom on April 3, 2008.
Chloe has now been with us 10 days. She is a
very easy dog to have around. We don’t understand why
her previous owners did not find her in the animal shelter,
since someone obviously put a lot of time into training her.
She is still half puppy, and loves to romp and play with people
or other dogs. We adore her happy growl, which is a low growl
(her equivalent of a moan), accompanied by a full body wag,
saying she is extraordinarily glad to see you again.
She is a tall dog with a small build. In fact,
her dainty face looks small compared to her long and rangy body.
She is very affectionate without being needy. From the first
day we noticed in her the hallmarks of good training. She has
never had an accident in the house, and immediately goes to
potty upon being let outside. Chloe will sit in front of a person
when they put their hand out instead of jumping up. She does
like to chew, but with a rawhide bone she happily channels that
need to the bone. She has never tried to get food off the table
or counter, and happily will sit and gently take handfed treats.
We have only heard her bark 3-4 times. When she is outside,
she waits quietly by the door or gently paws on the door for
us to remember her. If we are on the couch she will try to get
in our laps, but if pushed off a couple of times she gives up.
Chloe has played with two dogs. Our dog is older and settled,
not wanting to play constantly. Chloe will invite him to play,
but takes no for an answer better than other foster dogs. The
second is a neighbor’s dog. Rock is young and energetic
and very dominant. Chloe matched him in every way, not being
intimidated by him and wearing him into the ground playing.
We do not have a cat to test her reactions to them.
We have taken her on several walks. She is doing
better, but still needs work in this area. She doesn’t
pull on the leash, but continues to be slightly erratic in walking.
Also, Chloe is sometimes scared of cars and very scared of larger
vehicles like school buses.
In summary, Chloe is a keeper! We predict she
will easily integrate into a family and enrich their lives immensely.
Chloe was released to Gulf South Golden Retriever
Rescue today from the wonderful people at the Terrebone/Houma
animal shelter. She was picked up as a stray and not claimed,
but is in very good condition. She is medium/large, weighing
about 60 pounds and slightly underweight. She is reddish gold
in color. On first impression, she seems a mix of good training
and little worldly experience. She knows sit and come and is
calm and friendly with people. However, she doesn't seem to
have experience in riding in cars and is afraid of them while
on walks. Also, she acts like she has never been on a leash,
starting, stopping, being startled, and then bursting ahead.
But with all this, we see a VERY good mind and heart. She is
super responsive to us, both personally and in obedience. She
was playing with our large male golden within a couple of minutes
and has not shown any agression or fear of him. We will update
Chloe's story over the next week as we get to know her and she
becomes comfortable with us.
