Diva

Diva went to her forever home on Wednesday Sept 20, 2006 in Covington LA.

Update on February 20, 2007:

I can't believe we missed the Krewe of Barkus - I had it on the
calendar - but for the wrong Sunday. I heard about the "parking
difficulties" on the radio the following Monday - and went "oh,
no!". I really messed up. I had "decorations" for both dogs and
everything - I promise I'm more organized taking care of the dogs
than I am of my own life!!

Diva is such a dear. I read the postings on her part of the website
tonight. What a trip - she is so much more relaxed now. You might
not recognize her, except for those eyes and curly ears!! I think
she has grown almost two inches - she's almost the same size as
Frisco. Her coat is gorgeous - super shiny, very thick; she's
getting "feathers" on her legs and butt. Her tail is like a
beautiful plume - blonde hair growing out that isn't from being
sunbleached. Her naked, shaved tummy is all filled in.

I took her to obedience classes - just to have a consistency in her
life. She has learned her "house manners" - what she can get away
with. We take her running free a couple of times a day, and delight
in her "Water Park Event" when the ditches have water in them. With
her genetics, she can't help loving the water. We just laugh and
then take her home and dry her off!! Again and again...

Here are a couple more pictures of her...so you can see she sure is a
happy girl. We adore her. And I think the feeling is mutual.. we're
all happy campers!!

Update on september 28th:

Okay, here she is. After the sad story that was Bourre', we didn't
give up. I checked out the Golden Retriever Rescue for Louisiana.
I submitted an application, and we were approved. We made a trip to Bourg, La., near Houma, with Frisco, to see how everyone got
along.

Well, the neutered males that were there (on their home territory)
didn't like Frisco Anyway, there was this one female - sort of a Golden Retriever, actually a half-breed. She's half Golden Retriever, half Chocolate Labrador Retriever - a GoldaDor - or something. She's about a year old. She looks like a brown Golden Retriever. Just spayed 10 days ago - you might notice her naked stomach - I took out her stitches tonight - Larry distracted her while I snipped and removed - a real bonding experience for us.

Anyway, our household and hearts are full. She's a joyful young pup,
she and Frisco get along tremendously. She will either keep him
young or kill him with love and playfulness. Our cat, Zerbie, has
finally been within a few inches of her several times today, hissed,
swatted, and not been terribly upset, as he was with the prior adoptee, who tried to kill him twice (a story for another day).

So, here she is - several photos - she is enjoying a full water bowl,
ice cubes, two regular meals a day, many walks, plenty, plenty
love and attention. She is our "Dancing Diva" - when excited, she
sits and her front legs prance and dance.

Seems her original was "Godiva," after the chocolate, but her foster
mom shortened it to "Diva", which suits her more and more
every day. It's a joy to enable her to be a bit of a diva!

She is HOME. We love her so much already. Our neighbors, and their
dogs, all love her. We can't wait to see if she grows more, or not.
She's getting plenty of good nutrition, treats and more loving
attention than she ever knew existed...

I've always heard that rescued animals are so grateful that they just
adapt to your life - so I'd suggest that if you haven't tried it -
go adopt a pet from a shelter....if you have any doubts, contact
me...I'll testify!

Stay tuned to Animal Central...

Update on sept 25th:

Hi, Judy!
And Carol and Jim!

Well, I've been a little distracted by the "girl." She is a delight. We love her. She has learned about cuddling up with us on the sofa. She is learning the joys of dog toys and lots of
walks and dog "cookies". She's met most of the neighborhood dogs and their people - everyone remarks on what a beautiful girl she is.

Frisco (our Golden) is great with her. She has taught him to "play" - she gives him a nip, he responds, and then off they go - like two elephants. It's like mouth wrestling - or whatever
they have decided are the rules...I think Diva would play forever, but we give them a time out so Frisco can rest.

The cat moved upstairs, but is coming downstairs when he realizes Diva is outside or in her crate. I've held him within a couple of feet of her and she seems totally disinterested in him,
so I'm sure the cat will figure it out and start hissing at her when necessary, and get back on with his life.

So, life here is good. Actually, very good. We love her, she seems to love us - she's eating like a horse, learning the rules of the house. It has been a long time since Frisco was a little guy, and it's a pleasure to watch Diva prancing and dancing around the house. We think she will live up to her name!!

Attached is a short video Larry made of her this afternoon, playing with a bone. She actually hit me in the butt with a tennis ball yesterday while I was unloading the dishwasher. She throws toys in the air - with not too much care - I happened to be the unintended target! So, we're keeping her busy, well fed, and much loved.

I'll send some photos - I took a bunch of them, but with the flash, and they're kind of spooky looking with the red eyes, etc. I'll take some outside, if I can get her to slow down long enough.

All is well in Covington -

Thanks for everything you all do.

Meet Godiva...like a fine box of chocolates. She is a unique chocolate/golden retriever mix that has the personality of an assorted box of chocolates. :o) What a beauty indeed. Her foster mom calls her "Diva" though. She has stunning eyes that can melt the moon and "oh so pretty" pigtails. This precious Hershey girl would love nothing better than to swim all day long at a beach or in an ocean of love. Diva was rescued from the pound awaiting certain death…can you imagine someone wanting to put this young semi-sweet morsel to sleep? By no fault of her own, she was unsocialized in her puppy development, but has made great strides with her foster mom.

Diva is approximately 1 year old. She walks on a leash real well, and has learned the "sit" command by her loving fosters . She does exceptionally well with other dogs and absolutely loves PLAYTIME.
