Jude- went to his forever home on April 27, 2008 in LA

Jude is doing great. He seems real comfortable with the family and our home. Of course the pool is his most favorite spot and he is usually wet (at least on the underside).
We've enjoyed long walks in the park and to go watch Brett's baseball practice. He was a little over stimulated watching all those baseballs and wanting to retrieve every one. Beth

update in June 2008

Jude is probably the best dog we have ever had. So sweet, smart and
cuddly. With the summer heat he has pretty much turned into a house dog.
We tried to get him trimmed to help with the heat, but he freaked out at
the groomers. And as much as he likes to swim, it is a struggle to give
him a bath. But he really does not get that stinky.
We are trying to wean him from the crate at night. The first night he
woke up in the den and went into Elise's room around midnight and wanted
to play, so in the crate in went. The next night he slept in Brett's
room and was great. In fact we had to wake him up in the am to go
outside. Last night he was frisky again.
We play lots of ball, take lots of walks and he hangs out with us at
the baseball games. And you will love this-the other day Elise was
walking him just in the neighborhood and she comes across some people
filming a public information commercial. So she stand there and watches
them for a minute, then a guy comes over to her and asks if they can use
Jude in the commercial. The dog they were using was not cooperating and
all he would have to do is let the guy walk him in the commercial. She
said she wasn't sure he would go with someone else since he was a rescue
dog and is a little funny with strangers. So he said OK and walked off.
She started to leave and a lady ran up to her and offered her money and
begged her to let them try walking him. She said OK you can try and he
was good until the guy stopped and them he kind of cowered like he was
going to hit him. Poor thing, I think whatever happened to him in a
previous life was done by a man and involved abuse.

Anyway, he could have been a STAR!

4/17/08 update on Jude:

Jude is full of puppy energy. He is fun to watch as he chases his tennis ball around. If I tire of throwing the ball, he will play with it by himself. He will return the ball to you repeatedly but will not always release it. While we are on our walks, if he sees anyone playing with anything that flies (balls, Frisbees, etc) he stops and pulls to join in the fun.

Jude does well in a crate. He doesn’t always want to go in but he will comply. He does fine once he is in. He would rather be out then in but I can understand that, especially when his 2 foster brothers are roaming around freely. I have started letting him have some time out of the crate unsupervised. So far…so good. He has had no accidents and nothing has been chewed. There is no sign that he has been sneaking up on the furniture.

Jude seems generally trained. He is house broken, he can “sit”, he walks well on a leash, and so far, he hasn’t chewed anything. (He has brought me my slippers though. I don’t know what his goal was but he dropped them when I told him to.) He seems to prefer chewing tennis balls or Kongs then anything else. Jude has had the opportunity to bolt from our property on 2 occasions now. When I called him, he came right back.

Jude is a bit protective when strange men come up unannounced. He will bark and growl. Once I introduce him, he is fine. He may make a better watchdog then most goldens!

This handsome boy has some scarring around his left eye. We do not know how this occurred or if the fur will grow over it. The accident seems to have been just to the area around the eye not to the eye itself.

I picture Jude with an active family who can give him the play time he needs. As stated earlier, he loves to play fetch. He also enjoys wrestling with humans. I believe that Jude would be best placed in a home where he is the only dog. He doesn’t seem to have an interest in other dogs. I wouldn’t say he dislikes other dogs, he simply ignores them. While at a dog event, he met many dogs and the few he showed interest in; he acted inappropriately and got nipped.

Approved applicants may reach Jude's foster family at aliciaborges@juno.com for more info.

Jude comes to us from the St. Tammany Animal Shelter where he was brought in as a stray. When no one claimed him, Gulf South was called to take him in. Jude is a young, energetic male. He is a petite boy who is currently under weight. He has a medium reddish gold coat with lighter gold highlights. He is a handsome dog.

4-3-08: Jude has only been in his new foster home for a few hours so an update will come soon. In the few hours he has been here, he has shown a strong affinity to balls of any kind. He has not spent any time without one in his mouth. He love to fetch and is very quick about it. (He just got neutered so he had to be slowed down). Jude gets along well with my 2 well socialized goldens.

He has had some training in his life. He knows how to sit, he walks pretty well on a leash but the extent of his training has not yet been evaluated. He does seem to be crate trained and so far no accidents in the house.
