Mattie

Mattie went to her forever
home in Florida on July 13, 2007.
Here is an update from
her new parents on August 28, 2007:
Hi Jim and Charley,
Just a little Mattie update. We are all doing wonderfully. She is definitely
our dog now. She is comfortable enough that she keeps her tail up,
sometimes charges ahead of me thru the door now, surfs the coffee table
for a stray nut or crumb, hops right up on our bed like she belongs
there, leads the way to the door when anyone picks up their keys or
her leash. She has come to love her toys although she thinks they all
belong in the middle of the room instead of in the toy box. And small
area rugs must be bunched up instead of flat. She likes the dog park
although some of the dogs there play pretty rough. And she even lept
into the pool once on her own. We have been so busy here that we haven't
had much time to swim so think if things ever settle down and we get
more time in the pool she will get to really enjoy it. Meanwhile we
are starting to think about a buddy for her. Smallish, good house manners,
plays well with other dogs, around two years old, and we would really
like a dog who likes to swim and play with toys. Keep on the lookout
for us please. Hope all is well with you. And thanks again for our
wonderful Mattie.

Dear Charley and Jim,
Just thought I would give you a little Mattie update. When she first
came here, her tail was firmly clamped between her legs. All the time.
Now she walks around most of the time with her tail up and wagging!!
She is getting more comfortable and secure here with us. However she
is still timid, easily startled and wary of new or strange things and
people.
We think no one ever played with toys with her when she was a puppy
because she has no clue how to play with dog toys. We are giving her
little daily lessons, trying to find the lost puppy inside. She is
not a big ball fan either but we are working on that too. When we throw
the ball for her in the cage she immediately takes it out to the backyard
to her "lair". She seems to enjoy wading at the pool's edge
but swimming is too scary so far. She certainly enjoys chewing on bones
though.
But we know she is our dog now. Two days ago she barked and GROWLED
at a stranger in our yard!!! Yes indeedy, we are hers.

Hi Charley and Jim,
Mattie is doing just fine. She is still pretty timid but gaining confidence
every day. We took her to the vet Tuesday. He says that he only uses
the soft kill heartworm treatment now because the other is so dangerous.
So he is in concurrence with the Gulf South vets.
We went for a swim in the pool yesterday. With coaxing she went for
one little lap but all in all seemed to have a good time with the excitement.
On our walks she has met the very large neighborhood turtle. Don't
know which one of them is more cautious. She has also discovered lizard
hunting in our pool cage. That is just so funny. Would love to have
seen her chase the squirrels at your place.
She sleeps well through the night-on the floor. She is invited onto
our bed til lights out. That seems like something she was never allowed
before. She has an eager appetite. Her house manners are beautiful
and toilet manners flawless. She is affectionate, gentle, and loves
to be petted. She loves to run and snoop in our back yard. It took
her one showing of the dog door and she was in and out just fine. She
will chase the ball and bring it back to us in the backyard. But if
we throw the ball in the cage for her to chase, she just hauls it out
to the back yard. She has a big stash out there.
In case you haven't figured it out by now, we love her and think she
is a wonderful new addition to our family. I still need to take some
pictures here and send them to you. Thank you for choosing us as her
new family.

Yesterday we went to Marianna, FL to get Mattie. She
is a beautiful, reddish 22 month old golden retriever. Mattie has lived
in a number of homes so is a little shy and nervous. She has beautiful
house manners and toilet manners. We think she will be the perfect
addition to our family and look forward to the time when she is confident
that she is in her forever home. If you believe in "meant to be" Mattie
is it. Ron and I were married Sept 22, 1973. Twenty five years later
on Sept 22, Maize, our second golden retriever, was born. We called
her our golden dog for our silver anniversary. So guess when Mattie's
birthday is? Sept 22, 2007. We had already chosen her and when her
foster dad told us her birthday, we knew it was 'meant to be.'
My name is Mattie. I am 18 months old. My foster dad
thinks I am one beautiful girl and I really love to be with people.
I was not taken very good care of in my first home and I have heartworms
but I have been on preventative and I will be fine now. If you are
looking for a sweet, beautiful girl that will cuddle with you all the
time, your search is over.
