Cricket- adopted in May 2011 and going to live with a man who is willing to work with her issues.

From her new daddy -

update in april 2012

Hey Judy:

It's been about a year so I thought I'd give you a Cricket update... she's doing wonderful, she is heartworm free.  She has the sweetest personality, is well behaved, walks well on the leash and killed one of my neighbors chickens!  Thankfully Sean is a good guy... he actually thought it was kinda funny.  She dug under the fence, got into the coup, grabbed one and took it to my yard then went back and got another!  I found  the dead one's feet sticking up out of the drt behind ,my garage.

Enclosed are some pictures!

Hope all is well and thanks again.

Dale

Hi Judy--Just wanted to let you know, I picked up Cricket today, and she’s having a ball and has already found Christy’s toy basket!  She’s quite fascinated with my fish also.  I also sent one of my favorite pictures of Christy… she sure knew how to make herself at home!  As does Cricket!!-Dale

Cricket continues to be a loving and submissive dog to the people around her.  Cricket has obviously had good training.  She has lots of energy but has not shown any destructive behaviors even on days we don't give her much exercise.  In fact, walks seem to be new to her, as she is very erratic walking on a leash.  Our backyard seems to be a little scary to her, with neighbors right beyond the fence, birds flying out of bushes, and lizards scurrying around on walls.  But she is learning to explore and will now voluntarily stay outside for a little while, often preferring to lie on the back porch with the door open.  She is completely crate trained .  If she is put in a crate, you don't even know she is there.

Her only issue is that she is very frightened of strange dogs.  Unlike most goldens, she immediately growls a warning to other dogs.  If the other dog growls back, she will attack.  We have a very laid back male golden who does not have an alpha bone in his body.  She growled at him on and off for about 36 hours when he entered her personal space.  We watched them carefully and did not leave them alone.  After three days they seem to be comfortable with each other and she hasn't growled lately.  Because of this behavior, we would recommend a home with either passive dogs or no other dogs.  However, we would recommend training no matter what home she goes to, so that she can overcome her fear of strange dogs.

It would be a shame if Cricket was overlooked for adoption because of her fear.  She is truly perfect in eve ry other way.

Although she is HW+, she has no clinical signs and her heart sounds good.  She is on HW preventative now to keep future HW's from developing and has started taking Doxycycline under the care of a vet. Treatment with Doxycycline to kill the Wolbachia parasite weakens the Heartworms and makes then unable to reproduce, lessens their adverse effects on the body and greatly reduces the chance of adverse reaction during Heartworm treatment.(dogaware.com)
