Update in october-

Emily's just getting better! She eats alongside the other two dogs and leaves them alone when she finishes.
No more countersurfing. She loves walks in the park, and greets as many people and dogs as she can. She
was mobbed by small children and loved every minute of it, letting them pet and hug her. Since she's on
medication for her hips, she can jump and run, and is usually the one to start play wrestling with Leif and
Micky. She was a big hit at the Delgado Animal Healh Fair.
Also, she makes purring sounds when she gets really comfortable and is being petted.

Update from her foster dad-sept 19th-She spent some time in a house where there are
two young cats. She had treats with them and let them eat right next to her with no problem. The cats got
within inches of her and all she did was look at them. No problems at all. Another plus for the queen!

-august 7th--

We've been fostering Emily since 7/23. She's been great to have around. The medication for her hips has
helped a lot and she can jump into the car/bed/couch/lap with no trouble. She plays a lot with Leif and
Micky. She gets scared during storms and likes to be snuggled in someone's lap.

I've taken her to the small market in the park in Pass Christian, she's good with small children and other dogs.
She made friends with a young chihuahua.

Emily's a chow hound and will countersurf and snag food from your hand if she can. She will push the other
dogs away from their food and eat theirs if they let her. A little growl from them usually stops her.

She's appointed herself queen and has only been demoted to princess for countersurfing.

Attached are a few new photos.

Emily is a large, medium gold dog with a classic calm, golden personality. She loves people, wanting to be close to us. She has no trouble with our 2 dogs, a laid back 6 year old male and a “don’t bother me” 11 year old female.

She has recently been diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia and is considered a "special needs" golden.

Update on Emily:  June 13, 2010

Emily has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia.   You might wonder how this plays out in her daily life.  First, some background.  When she came to GSGRR, we noticed her low energy level and a slight limp at times in her back legs.  When she was brought in for a kennel cough check up, we asked that her hips be examined.  X-rays confirmed that she has hip problems.  The vet said she was probably in pain from the hips.  Also, her hips might degenerate enough in the next year or two to warrant further procedures.

Today Emily is on an anti-inflammatory medication which has increased her mobility and eliminated most of her pain.  She has gone from lethargic to lively.  She now runs for short periods of time.  She even likes to swim in our pool for 8-10 doggie paddle strokes at a time.   She can walk, run, and even climb stairs in a normal manner.  Her hips are not keeping her from basic life activities.  They just seem to limit her speed and stamina.

Emily is a golden girl with a golden personality.  If you have a spot in your home and heart for an older golden who will be a faithful friend, please consider Emily.  “Oldie but goodie” is a perfect description of Emily.

Emily has only had 1 accident inside in over two weeks, which was probably our fault. She does not like a crate and was always pawing to get out. She now has free run of our house 24/7, preferring to lie on a soft bed in our family room to be close to the action.

Emily seems to be very smart. She is the type of dog where one imagines wheels turning in her brain. She was able to get through 3 barriers we put up in a doorway without jumping or destroying them. Also, if she doesn’t want to do something, (like go in a crate), she will see through any trick, including food treats!

Emily has been an angel. She does not chew on anything, does not counter surf, and doesn’t jump on people. She is very easy to walk on a leash.

Emily doesn’t understand commands except for sit and down. Yet when we call her name and engage her, she willingly comes to us, unless she thinks we are blocking her away from everyone else. (see “smart” above) This was a common problem when she was in quarantine with kennel cough, which she got while in an animal shelter. When outside, she tends to stay close to people.

Due to being quarantined with kennel cough, we have not tried her with children or cats. But we will try her with them and update when she is totally well. She has a mild fear of storms. During a thunderstorm, she gets as close to us as possible, preferably on our laps. There has been no destructive behavior during our almost daily violent south Louisiana thunderstorms, one lasting over an hour.

Except for being heartworm positive, Emily has no strikes against her. Anyone wanting a beautiful, loving golden with liquid brown eyes, intelligence, and low energy will find a gem in Emily.

If you would like to find out more about Emily, please fill out an application and mention Emily’s name. This does not commit you to adopting her, but does allow us to contact you and see if your family would be a good fit for Emily.
