Update from momma:

In January 2009:

Hi Alicia,

Hope your holidays were great. We had a lot of family in town, hence a lot of dog interaction! We found that Buck's energy level matches up really well with my daughter's dog Greta. She is a one year old Springer Spaniel. They made friends very quickly and are way funny to watch play. Not only that, but Alan's brother got a new dog from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter and she makes a great buddy for Buck as well. I have got to make a video of those two playing because it really is a riot! Buck is doing great and Alan works with him every day. I am personally working with the dogs on greeting me a bit calmer when I get home from work (because that can get a bit exciting). Everyone has to have their time for love. We have learned about the escape artist, but have been working on a good solution to limit his ability to escape. You are right about him at least staying at the house when he does it though. Still working on the cat issue. He and one of the cats are having a harder time at getting along, but she is the one instigating it a lot of the time. He listens very well and learns the rules pretty quickly.

I've attached two pics. One is Buck and Greta trying to take each other down. I have video of those two playing tug of war but, I don't now much your email box can take. The other is Buck and Greta with my daughter.

Needless to say, He really loves Alan and Alan really loves him. I think they were actually made for each other. We can certainly call it a rescue group success! Sorry to say, but you guys aren't getting him back:) I certainly have to thank you for getting him out of the shelter and sparing him so that he could finally get to his forever home. I'll give you another update soon. BTW: You can use any of his story or pictures on the websites. I'm all good with that.

April

Hi Alicia,

Well, it was a long trip but, we finally made it home about 8:30. We made a couple of stops along the way - I had to bring home some cracklings! Anyway, the dog was really good in the car and the introduction to Kelsey, the Shepherd, went just find. It took a few minutes to establish who the alpha was, after that they have been fine. In fact, Buck had Kelsey going in a rousing game of tag this evening - a good sign. Funny thing has been the cats. One of my cats is a quiet, gentle girl and the other is a raving maniac. The maniac didn't like the dog from the moment he stepped in the door and she bolted at him a few times scaring the crud out of him. Needless to say, he stuck by either Alan or I all evening long and took the long way around the cat when he traveled by her. Today, she got her comeuppance. While he was sleeping, she creped up to his face and smacked him with her powder-puff paw. It startled him, but he suddenly realized she had no claws, hence, no pain. Well, now he has no fear and she has had an attitude adjustment! I have to say, this guy is so sweet, and such a source of constant humor! This evening he discovered the pool. He was just about to take a flying leap into it when I stopped him. I expect he will be in it by tomorrow. Anyway, all is going well so far and everyone is holding their own. I'm sending a picture of Alan and Buck from Last night. Note the Doggie Smile :)

Thanks for this little treasure,
April

Our little Duck Toller, Hebert, is adopted to Alan and April of Tomball, TX as of December 7, 2008. They recently lost their 15 yr old dog. Alan is retired and is home most of the day. As you see from the photos Alan is wheelchair bound. When Hebert met him, you would think that he has been around wheelchairs quite a bit. He was not at all apprehensive. He did almost get himself run over but Alan shortened the leash and Hebert did fine. Hebert will be living with a female GSD as well. He will get to be socialized with other rescues as this couple do participate in fundraisers for area rescue groups. Hebert was just the right size for them and he seemed happy to join them. Attached are photos of the adoption.

HEBERT

(Pronounced “A-Bear”)

Hebert came to us from the East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control. Although this is a kill shelter, they held on to Hebert for several months until he could get rescued. GSGRR took him into our program on 11/14/08 even though he is not a true golden. It is speculated that Hebert is a Nova Scotia Duck Toller or Toller mix.

Hebert is an agile 40 lb male who is about 2-3 years old. He has tested heart-worm negative and is on prevention. He is UTD on inoculations and was neutered on 11/14/08.

He has a fun loving, good natured personality. He knows some basic commands but tries to charm you into playing with him instead of training him (LOL)! He is house broken. He is very smart and should prove to be trainable once focused. He seems to thoroughly enjoy romping with other dogs but he does need a proper introduction prior to releasing him into a playgroup. He loves to play fetch and he bounds like a gazelle to “capture” the ball.

Hebert will dig out of a fenced yard if left unsupervised for too long as discovered by his foster family when he was left in the yard on a beautiful day while they ran errands. He did not run-off but went to the front of the house and hung out.

His foster family is smitten with him. They believe this will be a great addition to most families though I do not believe that he would be the perfect choice for a family with toddlers. He has been introduced to a neighbor’s cat and the introduction seemed to go well. He did not try to chase, growl or snap at the cat.
