Maddox and his new mom- January 2011 updates in april 2012 Hi! I don't check my email much (obviously), so I apologize for the delay. However- Maddox is doing GREAT! Finally, after a year, he's heartworm negative. We've got him running/walking daily (he has responded beautifully), & he still visits his cousin lab on wkends. We plan to continue working w/ swimming (only started acclimation last summer b/c of activity restrictions), & he has donated bld for critically ill patients several times this past yr, w/ success. He is perfect donor, stays completely still & can give a lg amt. He still rolls his eyes about all the cats- thinks he should be the only one, but he always lets them curl up on him:) All in all, a match made in heaven. We're thinking of a second golden, but enjoy devoting our energy just to him so much that I'm not certain if it's time. Anyway, thank you, & I'll get some pics together! Kaylen, David, & Maddox
Update in April 2011 Hey! How ya doing? Things are great here, Boy-o has finally relaxed. He's still a worry wart, but he is settled in. Pretty much focused on filing any & all possible data in his computer but has moments of complete meltdown. Fortunately, these only last a few minutes, he gets a grip & onward we go! Storms don't really bug him, he simply finds his little comfort niche for the duration. We walk nightly, 1 mile. There's the daily morning brushing (to promote bonding) & the weekend adventures. He does ok @ the beach, not as frightened of the waves as I thought he'd be. He's stellar when anyone approaches- immediately sits like a proper gentledog. (He will lick kids, since they're on his level....) Anyway, life is good! Thanks! Kaylen & Maddox
Adopted and living in Panama City, FL update on january 30, 2011 HI! It's me again- hope u guys're ok... I'm loving this! :) Get to go to work w/ Mom every day, some afternoons she leaves me w/ Dad. My fav is to go walk @ this place that has 2 of the hugest dogs I've ever seen (not really convinced they ARE dogs, don't smell quite right...) as well as many different types of birds (I think Mom called some them "turkeys," "peacocks," "mallards," & "geese.") Then there're these other things that I'm sure I saw on a tv commercial, make a noise like "N-a-a-h-h." Goats, I believe. We've gone to a couple STORES (i.e., for me!) & I just couldn't help myself. I tried to be good, honestly, but it was all so overwhelming! Had fun meeting other dogs & swapping opinions about food & toys, Mom let me pick out 3 new additions for my basket/collection. I got to visit/see all these other STRANGE smelling critters that I just had no info on in my hard drive, so it wa s a learning curve. Let me see- hamsters, rats, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, & oh yes, the smelliest of them all, ferrets! I responded to all the birds, I prefer them to anything else. Guess it's a genetic bias? Anyway, Mom says all my id info is updated, so I guess I'm official. We're walking every evening, which I'm kinda leery during cuz darkness worries me. Glad I've got Mom to protect me!!! I shy from shadows & freeze @ what alarms me, but I'll get used to it. Everyone who knows me says I'm doing very well & that I'm a good dog, they can see me changing. I'm relaxing, don't even whimper/have bad dreams any more. I managed to get a steak off Mom's plate one night & I faithfully eat cat pooh from the yard every time I go outside, but hey, no one's perfect! I love wkends since we (me & Mom) go for a car ride, go get lunch w/ Grandma & Aunt M, & I take my cuz Riley for a walk. We get to say hi to cuz Chance thru his fence s ince he gets too stressed w/ too much company, he's too old to play anyway. Anyway, things are GOLDEN GREAT here! See ya! Slurps & burps, M
P.S.- We're all very impressed w/ himself- he has a natural intuitiveness & can accurately read pretty much any person or animal. I just can't get him to always do as I ask w/ any consistancy! He's still working out a LOT of energy, but everyone says that he has definitely turned his focus on me. He's ALWAYS watching me, waiting to hear commands, trying to get what I want him to do, so there's progress. -Kaylen
Hey! It's me, Gold Boy Maddox, coming @ you from the Florida Panhandle. The trip here was LONG (in Golden time, I mean!) but good- I slept the whole trip, despite my Aunt Marcia's driving... Now, my back yard is P-AWESOME!!!:) Love it, love it, LOVE IT!!! (Plus there're 3 outdoor cats to chase, only I have to make sure Ma's not watching....) Indoors there're 6 cats, they're kind of snooty 'til you get to know them. Heck, I didn't even realize there were so many of 'em @ first, they just sort of kept coming out of the woodwork to look me over during the night! :) Mom keeps a much sharper eye out for these 3, plus they pretty much stand their ground (I think they're trying to send me a message about pecking order around here...) Anyway- I rooted through MY basket of toys- good, but the selection isn't exactly for young dogs. Mom & I are headed to THE store (PetSmart !!!!!!!!!!!******!!!***^^^^***!!) so I c an pick out something more suitable. Went to work w/ Mom Friday- wow! No wonder she smells so! Everybody's pretty cool, thought I was gorgeous (of course.) Mom's boss aka The Doc is a Golden fan himself, we hit it off. There's a fenced back yard so I got lots of "mini training" & I got to interact w/ coworker's Dach-ie, Scrappy. Home for lunch w/ Dad, who brought me a really fun beachball home from his run- it'd been blowing down the road, minding its own business when he snagged it. HA! Sadly, it lasted about 5 seconds in my canines, but we had a joyous time romping. Picked up some branches that had blown down, while we were @ it. I like that game, too :).... All told, I'm settling in. The dogbed thing is different, but hey- we have to keep open minds, don't we? I mean, Life's meant to be an adventure about learning, right? It takes time to get these people where they need to be- besides, I can afford to be patient because time is one thing I have lots of! The only thing we're butting heads about is that I tend to beg food too intently, I get too close to counters/table w/ my mouth & tongue ready for action. It's ok, Mom's just training me to stay put in the adjoining living room- I can see (smell) all & keep track, just can't get underfoot. I also don't come too well off lead, but it's only because I'm on sensory overload. Once I accept that this is REALLY all mine, I'll be better. Let's see, what else? Well, I just had to break up a cat fight- they make lots of noise & aren't really good for a whole lot else, I really must speak to Mom about why she feels the need to have so many of the shiftless bums around! Well, actually, I discovered I LOVE eating cat poop (boy, you should've SEEN her face!). And cat urp isn't bad, either. So, maybe 6 cats ain't so bad..... Anyhoo- THANK YOU for everything, I mean it! SLURPS & BURPS TO YOU! MADDOX p.s.- This is K- I've found he's microchipped so I'm in the process of changing /updating info. David's very pleased & already bonding, & the cats will get over their snits eventually! Thank you guys!
Name: Maddox Age: 3.5 years Weight: 76 pounds Gender: Male Spay/Neuter: yes Immunizations: 04/09/10 Heartworm Status: positive Date of Intake: 11/18/10 Energy level: moderate-high Maddox is a 3.5 year old male (though he seems much younger). He comes to us from a family in S.E. LA who turned him in because their family has grown and they had no time for him. He was tied out for quite a while so he is learning to be a proper house pet. Initially he was very nervous and everything frightened him. Doorways and ceiling fans made him duck. Everything was new to him. Now he prefers to be inside at all times unless with humans. Considering this, we were surprised that he had very few accidents in the house. He is crate trained. He is a fun loving, silly dog. Everything is a game to him. One of his favorite games is to try to steal the slippers off your feet and then play “keep away”. You can almost hear him laughing as he does this. He enjoys playing with other dogs and will play as long as he has a partner. He enjoys going to the dog park to run with the other dogs. He is very loving and seems smart. He needs a good walk or romp at the dog park every day in order to burn off some energy. Physically, Maddox is a very handsome dog. He has a nice thick, curly dark gold coat. He has broad shoulders which gives him the look of a heavier dog. He is just about standard on height and weight. He is a joy to watch run. Maddox has heartworms and is being treated with ivermectin based heartworm preventative and doxycycline. Although this treatment take a longer time to clear him of the worms, keeping him quiet for 8 weeks may not be possible due to his energy level. He will need to be retested in 1 year.
