Max
It has been a while since I communicated with you, hope all is well out your way.
Really hard to believe that Max will be with us a year on May 1. Still wouldn't trade him for the world.
In early March we drove up to Wisconsin as we were going to the Bahamas for vacation and had a friend stay with him at our home while we were gone. He adjusted without a hitch but really was happy to see us on our return. The gal that took care of him while we were gone took him to her fathers home for several days, her dad has a cat but Max and the cat got along good. He did catch a wild rabbit, however. We drove back to Alabama last weekend.
Those thyroid pills have done wonders for him, his coat is back to normal he looks great and he has started on a l ower dosage.
Will close say Hi to your other half.
Norm, Jan, and Max

Max went to his forever home on May 1, 2010.
Max has a new home with Norm and Jan. They seem to be a great fit for Max. He will reside in AL in the winter and WI in the summer. I am excited for Max. After 6 months of working with him, he sure is a good dog!
update in august 2010--

Hi again,
Well we just got back from 18 days in northern Minnesota. Max is a great traveler did the 475 miles like a real trooper.
His initial exposure to the lake is best described as cautious. He went in to get a drink, but barely got his feet wet. We worked with him dragging him out into progressively deeper water until he finally had to swim, maybe 3 feet of water. A few days later he got nudged off the end of the dock. He did ok but seemed to still be uneasy about the ordeal. With each day he seemed to get a little more adventuresome in the water, but never swam without outside influence.
Ever since we got him he has always stayed really close to us especially with Jan, almost appearing to be attached at the hip. While this is stil l true he has been broadening his comfort zone.
He received the first of two lyme disease shots before we went to Minnesota and will get #2 later this week. His hot spots were all healed but recently re-developed one on the side of his face, the rest have fur growing back.
He is smart as a whip, as I previously said he hangs pretty close around the house, but when the devil overcomes his self control to not scratch he will sneak around the corner of the adjacent room to get a quick, discreet scratch.
I have attached two photos of him at the lake.
We plan on introducing him to a cat or two in a very controlled setting to try to normalize his behavior with them.
He now eats in a normal manner, requiring no supervision or devices in his bowl; at the lake several times he walked away from his dish without finishing it until a short time later. He is still a counter surfer if given the opportunity.
Will close, hope this finds you well, I understand it has been miserably hot down your way.
Take care.

Meet Max. Max is a 5 year old from the Greater New Orleans area. He came in extremely malnourished and emaciated. His coat was in poor condition but is filling in beautifully.
Max is a strong, loving boy. Though his previous owner did not care for him properly, he does not seem to hold that against humans. He wants to be by your side absorbing all the love he can get. He generally gets along with other dogs though he is a bit of an alpha dog and will get into squabbles over toys and kibbles. He loves visiting with small children but due to his food or toy aggression with other animals, it would be safer for him to live in a family who does not have very small kids. He has not shown aggression towards humans. He does better with female dogs. He does not like cats and will chase them to hurt them if he catches them.
Max knows basic commands, such as, sit and lay down. He is very good on a leash. He comes when called and does not run off if he gets out of the yard or house. He is fairly good about not begging at the table, however; he will take food off of the counter and out of the garbage when left alone. He has shown no other improper behaviors in our home with the exception of stealing socks and Kleenex. He is smart and has figured out how to escape from 2 different wire crates. He has free run of the house.
This is a good dog that deserves a good home. If you feel that you can provide a loving home for Max, please complete and application. (If you do not hear from us after 48 hrs of completing the application, please e-mail us to verify we received it.)
