Update on December 4, 2009

Rebel had his surgery today.  It went really well and he's back at home, well on the road to recovery.  The mass was removed with ease and appeared to be a benign lipoma.  He was found to have a urinary tract infection so he's on antibiotics for that.  His kidney function is mildly compromised but that might resolve with the infection.  The vet didn't seem too concerned about it.  His teeth were cleaned and are in really good shape for his age.

On the cat front, Rebel can now be in the same room with the cat. . .as long as the cat doesn't run.  If the cat runs, Rebel chases.  At least we're making progress!

Tana

Rebel is a wonderful big tall golden boy.  He was abandoned at the St. Bernard Parish Animal Shelter in early November. The previous owners didn't even walk inside to turn him in.   Luckily, he found his way to GSGRR!  He is an absolutely adorable dog.  The word "PERFECT" comes to mind!  He knows all his commands, is house trained, rides great in the car, and great with small kids and dogs of all sizes.  He LOVES being inside and will only go out to use the bathroom and go on short walks.  He lets you know he has to go out and wants to come back in by barking.  He loves tennis ball products and his nylabone but doesn't have much energy to actually play with the other dogs.  He prefers a loveseat to a pet bed but is willing to compromise if one of the other dogs in the home gets there first.  He has great manners and does not beg when we are eating at the table.  He does like to be scratched and petted on a regular basis and will nudge your arm if he feels the session is not complete.

The vet did acknowlege that he has moderate arthritis in his back hips and knees.  This does slow him down but he gets around just fine.  However, he would need to be in a home where there are no major stairs to get in and out of the house.  He is on a special food to help with his joints and his coat (he was shaved by the animal shelter but his coat is starting to grow back in).   Rebel does not need to be crate trained.  He has been given full freedom in our house and has not touched a thing.  Also, due to his arthritis, it is best if he can get up and walk around so he doesn't get too stiff.

Rebel has shown extreme curiosity in our indoor cat.  He likes to chase the cat but has not shown any aggression towards it.  I do feel he would do best in a home without cats though just to be on the safe side.

Rebel's ideal parents would be an older individual/couple that just want a dog as a companion and like to take short walks at most.  Although he is older, Rebel is full of spirit and love and will make a great addition to any family.
