update from his new momma:

Update in May 2009:

thought you like to know that Ryan continues to have a special place in our hearts!!  He is such a great dog and is becoming more and more comfortable with his new environments.  He's very favorite spot is Maine and we totally agree with him!!!

Ryan had his first ride on our family boat.  At first he needed some support when the boat started up; but as you can see by the pictures he has become very comfortable and is turning into a Mariner!!!  He loves when we dock the boat and hike for awhile on some of the islands!!

I couldn't immediately find him and when I went looking; he was in the boat snoozing as the boat was tide to the dock!!!

He has become fantastic with "coming" when called!!!  I don't think I could loose, even if I tried!!!

Thanks again for all your time and effort to save dogs like Ryan and make connections with people like us!!!  It has been a great match!!!

Thanks again,
Ginny

Hi Johnny and Jeanne,

Today I took Ryan to meet his new veterinarian at The Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston.
Everyone was very impressed with what a beautiful and great dog he is!

His vet checked his eyes and said he could not see anything unusual about the retinas. Dr. Kaye checked his eyes a couple of times with and without the lights on. He said Ryan's eyes look good. Dr. Kaye suggested if there were indicators that suggests Ryan has eye issues in the future he would strongly suggest he sees an othamologist.

Ryan weighted in at 65 pounds and looks very healthy. I did fill a prescription for a year's supply for "Heart Guard Plus" and he will be
starting him on flea and tick medicine too.

Ryan continues to be a tremendous joy in our lives and I can't imagine life without him! Ryan just loves walks in the woods and has become very proficient in the snow and ice. He loves the snow and we have lots of it for him to enjoy!!!

Thanks you for all your efforts!

Ginny

Hi Everyone,

Thought I would give you an update on Ryan!! Basically we are all doing
Great!

He is the most Loving, gentle dog I have ever met; but I guess you
already know this!

He has settled into our routine so smoothly. He is up early and out for
a short walk with his dad for the newspaper and then back for breakfast .
After a while we go for a longer walk usually for about an hour or so.
We usually run into a couple of dog groups along the way which Ryan has
found to be fun. He loves chasing other dogs or being chased. He is
friendly and gets along with all the dogs. My husband likes to throw
the tennis ball for him but Ryan decides when the game is over; he just
doesn't get the ball anymore!!! Ryan has been consistently reliable to
"come" when off leash; we only have him off leash in the park! I think he knows he is in our "pack". When it is time to go home we say to Ryan; "let's go home" and he runs up the hill through the open gate and into the
backyard. He is very smart!

Ryan has slept through the night from day one and needs a little time to
stretch and yawn before he is ready to go. We have not heard him bark.
When he sleeps very soundly after a walk or ball playing he breaths
hard; almost like snoring!

We just love him and he has enriched our lives so much with the little
time we have had him!

Tomorrow we are going to Maine to visit our son, daughter-in-law, and
their dog Hoku, a two year old Australian Sheppard. We will be staying
with Ryan in our home in Maine. So another new experience! We will
probably take him on a short hike in the woods given how well he
has done with the snow here. I'm sure he will realize it is much more
difficult running off trail. We will give you another update then!

Thanks again for all your efforts!

Ryan is a beautiful two year old male Golden Retriever. He is friendly
to every person he meets and likes to play and wrestle with other dogs.
Ryan is a young active dog that needs a lot of exercise and leadership.
When off leash he is not completely reliable to come when called, so he
needs a fenced yard to run and play in. Ryan is very affectionate and
likes to be petted. This wonderful companion animal follows me around
the house and lays at my feet when I sit down. Ryan goes into his crate
on command and sleeps through the night in the crate. Crates work best
when used in the center of family activity rather than a remote portion
of the house. Ryan is free in our house when we are at home and he is
either in his crate or in our outside kennel when we leave home for
several hours. Ryan likes to ride in a vehicle, is house broken, current
on shots, and has been neutered. He weighs 65 pounds and is in good
health. Ryan was tested for heart worms in March and the test result was
negative. He has been on heart worm prevention medication. Ryan is not a
keen retriever. He is a lover not a ball player.
