Who We Are

Gulf South Golden Retriever Rescue, Inc. (GSGRR) is a small group of volunteers. We take in purebred Golden Retrievers, and occasionally other dogs, from public and private shelters, and we accept owner-relinquished dogs from the Gulf Coastal states (LA, MS, AL, FL) in order to provide them with necessary veterinary care, to spay or neuter them as necessary, to evaluate their temperament and to socialize them, and to match them with loving, carefully selected adoptive homes. We are home based in the Greater New Orleans, LA area but have volunteers spread across the Gulf South and the Northeast. We place dogs not only in the Gulf South but in the Northeast as well.

Each Gulf South GRR member, officer, and foster care giver is a totally unpaid volunteer with family and work commitments. We strive to respond quickly to every inquiry received, but more importantly, we want to place the right dog in the right home. Should you not receive a timely reply, please email jsttub@gmail.com Please be understanding, however – we are really trying the best that we can!

Adopting a Friend

Potential adopters describe their ideal dog and their own background and expectations in an adoption application. This information helps us decide the best possible match between dog and family. We request references from the applicant's veterinarian and we sometimes visit the home for a scheduled visit prior to placement. There is a adoption fee which varies with the age or medical condition of the dog. The adoption fee helps GSGRR cover veterinary fees. The adoption fee is generally reduced in the case of a senior or special needs dog.

We have placed over 400 dogs in their forever homes. We have the best interest of the dog in mind and will not place a dog in a home unless we are very comfortable that the fit is appropriate. At least 200 of these goldens have been placed in the Northeast and are doing really well.

Because our greatest allegiance is to the dogs, we will first attempt to provide advice that may facilitate the adoption, so it will not be necessary to displace the dog yet again. However, if a new owner feels strongly that the adoption was ill-advised; we take the dog back into our program and try to find a more fitting placement. (A refund of the adoption fee is available only within 2 weeks of the adoption.) It is a violation of our adoption contract for a new owner to pass the dog on to another party or to take it to a shelter, because when we take in a dog, we consider it our responsibility for life.

As of May 1, 2008, we have to increase our adoption fee to $300 for a dog up to 7 years old. For goldens over 7 yrs old, the fee is now $200.

Cross Country Adoptions

Gulf South GRR will consider adoption applications from anywhere in the continental U.S., but shipment of an adopted dog is the financial responsibility of the adopter. Although there are exceptions, air cargo rates to ship a Golden Retriever typically run about between $250 and $400, including the necessary crate, with a value of $75, taxes, and airport fees.

Because so many of our rescued golden friends have heartworms, we have made available this reading material for those of you interested in some additional background. click here for article on heartworms

Since many of our rescues are from shelters, we are not always sure of their housebreaking status other than throughcrate training in our foster homes, please Click here for article on housebreaking an adult dog
